Word of the Week: Curry

Curry is a noun and defined as a food, dish, or sauce in Indian cuisine seasoned with a mixture of spices. However, in the US the word curry has become a universal term and can also refer to dishes in Vietnamese, Thai, Pakistani, and Mozambique cuisine, just to name a few. The word curry is an anglicized version of the Tamil word, a language spoken by the Tamil people of South Asia, kari meaning “sauce”. The anglicized word first appeared in the mid-1700’s in the cookbook The Art of Cookery Made Plain and Easy written by Hannah Glasse and was known among the spice traders of the British East India Company as kari podi or curry powder.
